The Sega Mega Drive (known as Sega Genesis in North America due to a trademark dispute) was released in Europe in 1990. Its predecessor, the Sega Master System had proven a success in Brazil and Europe but failed to ignite much interest in the Japanese or North American markets which were dominated by Nintendo with 90%+ market share. The Mega Drive set out to create a machine that would be at least as powerful as the then most impressive hardware on the market - the 16-bit Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, and the Macintosh II home computers. This is the second version of the Mega Drive and has a smaller design and ability to output stereo using standard AV cables. |
