The majority of spare and/or restored exhibits we sell are on our eBay store.
Two main reasons; SPACE and FUNDS.
Space. Let's say we have 10 copies of the same exhibit. 3 of those are on display, 2 are kept for spares, but then we have another 5 we don't need. Whilst one of our primary goals is to preserve and maintain computing history, we don't need 10 of the same item in order to do this. So whilst we make sure we keep a number of items spare for if (when) an item on display breaks or needs repair, and we keep spare machines for parts too, beyond that we have to consider some items to be sold in order to make space in our store rooms.
Funds. We are a charity and do not rely on grants and do not get any government funding. We're 100% volunteer run. We exist only through entry fees to the museum, selling items in our gift shop, donations, etc. An additional way to help fund the museum is by selling spare exhibits we do not need.
We also have a gift shop!! We sell a number of items in our gift shop (located in the reception area of the museum) including:-
Stock does change and rotate from time to time so make sure you come back and visit again to see what we have in store. If you're a repeat visitor make sure you ask for a loyalty stamp card in reception; fourth visit is free!
