Scouts, Guides, Youth Club visits etc

Scouts, Guides, Youth Club visits etc

About

As well as providing visits for school trips, we can also make the museum available in the early evenings for youth groups such as Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, Guides, etc. Many of our volunteers are "retired" girl guides and boy scouts (the founder included) so we love the opportunity to help the next generation.

Your group does not need to be a Scouting related organisation; we are happy to welcome all kinds of youth groups.

Booking

Booking does need to be arranged in advance and must be done via our booking form as we are run by volunteers and need to ensure we have volunteers available to open and run the museum for you.

Youth group bookings are provided on an exclusive basis; so if your group would like to visit the museum (apart from when we're open to the public on Saturdays) then you would have exclusive use of the museum.

To make a booking enquiry, please fill out our booking form.

Alternatively you can always just book online to visit on our normal opening days on Saturdays.

Pricing

Group numbers include adults/supervisors/carers/etc - we have to factor in total numbers to due fire regs etc. eg if you have 20 children and 5 adults, that would put your group size at 25 (not 20).

The pricing below is for exclusive use of the museum.

1.5 hour booking

Group size No of people Fee
Small 1 to 15 £100
Medium 16 to 30 £140
Large 31 to 45 Not available with 1.5 hour booking
XL 45 to 60 Not available with 1.5 hour booking

2.5 hour booking

Group size No of people Fee
Small 1 to 15 £110
Medium 16 to 30 £160
Large 31 to 45 £230
XL 46 to 60 £270

3.5 hour booking

Group size No of people Fee
Small 1 to 15 Not available with 3.5 hour booking
Medium 16 to 30 £190
Large 31 to 45 £280
XL 46 to 60 £330

Please ensure group size is as per your booking - If you arrive with a group larger than the amount you have paid for, you will need to pay the difference by credit/debit card on arrival.

Duration - Duration of booking includes any time you require prior to your guests arriving. So if you want half an hour before your guests arrive, then 2 hours after, you'll need a 2.5 hour booking.

Damages

We are a “hands on” museum with around 55 exhibits that visitors can see, touch, use, play and enjoy.

We tend to only show exhibits which can handle public use and a “bit of a battering”. We are happy to accept issues with wear, tear, and general use as it is to be expected. However we understand that some youngsters may want to deliberately vandalise or damage items. Any damages as a result of deliberate vandalism must be paid for by the organisation renting the museum at the time of the damage.

CCTV is installed and in use to be able to settle any disputes with regards to the cause of damages retrospectively. We hope you understand.

It is the responsibility of the group organisers renting the museum to keep an eye on the group they bring to ensure no deliberate damage is made to the exhibits. Thank you for understanding. We are volunteer run, and a charity, and these exhibits are often rare, expensive and difficult to replace.

FAQ

Q: How big is it?

A: We have about 1,600 sqft, spread over 2.5 floors and 6 themed rooms. We usually have around 55 hands on working exhibits, plus a variety of display pieces.

Q: I only want to bring a small handful of pupils (say 5 or 10), can you offer a cheaper rate?

A: Unfortunately not. Our main cost is electricity and when you visit we will make sure all the exhibits are turned on. We have approx 55 hands on exhibits so we have minimum charges in place to ensure we can cover our costs.

We are volunteer based and a registered charity, so we do not make any money.

Q: Do you have catering or refreshment facilities?

A: No we do not. However we are in the middle of Derby City Centre which has a large selection of eateries.

Q: Are there toilets?

A: Yes we have toilets. They are unisex toilets with separate cubicles for male and female.

Q: Wheelchair access?

A: Unfortunately not. We’d love to have access to wheelchairs but unfortunately the building is about 150 years old and this had not been factored in when they built it. We do not own the building so do not have the scope to put such access in.

Q: Public liability insurance / first aid / risk assessments / etc

A: We have public liability insurance, and first aid kits in the building (as well as all the necessary fire safety signage, equipment, etc).

We can provide you with a risk assessment template to use, however the end responsibility would lie with yourselves.

Some of our volunteers are first aid trained, but not all of them, so if your educational establishment needs a first aider for visits to institutions then we recommend one of the staff you bring with you is first aid trained.

Q: Are your volunteers DBS checked?

A: Yes, all of our adult volunteers are DBS checked with a basic DBS check.

Q: How do I get there?

A: Please see our find us page.

Q: Coach and minibus parking?

A: For information about coach parking, please see the Visit Derby coach parking page.

For minibus parking, we would recommend using the Full Street outdoor car park which does not have any height restrictions.

Q: How do I book or check availability?

A: Please fill out our booking form to check availability. Once availability confirmed we'll send you payment details.
